Unused cover for The Silence
Before my book The Silence was picked up by Allen & Unwin, I was considering self-publishing it along with two other books of mine, as there seemed to be no other option at the time; no one was publishing my work. This was the cover I designed, and there is no prize for guessing that I was influenced by the great covers on Penguin orange, blue, green and grey books of the sixties. I loved their simplicity and ability to distil a complex book into a powerful representative image. This isn't as good as those, but I didn't want to be too slavish, and I thought to make a wrap around cover. I did offer this design to the books eventual publisher, Allen & Unwin, but they rejected it. The orange remains.
